Our Philanthropy
The National Philanthropy of Sigma Psi Zeta is to combat violence against women in its varied forms. This includes but is not limited to the following: rape, incest, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, exploitation, the trafficking of women and children, the abuse of migrant workers, intimidation at work, child abuse, harassment, and spousal abuse. Any kind of physical, emotional, or mental duress constitutes violence.
Violence affects the lives of millions of women worldwide from all socio-economic and educational backgrounds. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impeding the right of women to participate fully in society. Violence against women takes a dismaying variety of forms and constitutes a violation of basic human rights. It is an obstacle to the achievement of a society's objectives of equality, development and peace. Of course, in this respect, ALL women - Asian or non-Asian - when abused, still bleed, cry and feel the same pain.
The sisters of Sigma Psi Zeta stand united behind our philanthropy and advocate for this cause on an organizational and individual level.
#ItsOnUs Initiative
In September 2014, the White House launched the National "It's On Us" campaign. The focus of the campaign is to create an environment where sexual assault is never acceptable and empower the college men and women to step in as active bystanders to prevent, discourage, or intervene when an act of violence has the potential to occur. It's On Us encourages college students to take a firm stance against sexual violence and join together to support survivors.
On January 22, 2014, Vice President Biden joined President Obama when he created the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault.
As part of this task force, Vice President Biden invited 10 heads of Greek organizations to the White House to participate in a round table series to discuss how the Greek community, the government, and the universities can change the culture and stop sexual assault. Sigma Psi Zeta was honored to be among the 10 leaders and to serve as the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Greek Representative in these discussions. In March 2015, Sigma Psi Zeta officially partnered with the "It's On Us" Campaign.
Sigma Psi Zeta commits to help keep all safe from sexual assault by being part of the solution and not another bystander.
